Netflix Commences Production on ‘My Brilliant Career’ Series in South Australia

Production has officially begun on Netflix’s highly anticipated series adaptation of ‘My Brilliant Career’, based on Miles Franklin’s iconic Australian novel. The sweeping period drama, produced by Jungle Entertainment, is currently being filmed across the picturesque landscapes of South Australia and within the transformed sets of Adelaide Studios.

According to an official press release from Netflix, the drama aims to reimagine Franklin’s beloved 1901 novel for a contemporary global audience, while faithfully preserving its enduring themes of ambition, fierce independence, and the quest for identity. The series will tell the compelling story of Sybylla, a spirited young woman determined to seize control of her own life in a rigid society constantly seeking to dictate her path. The production promises both historical authenticity and modern-day relevance, introducing this literary classic to a new generation of viewers worldwide.

Leading the talented ensemble cast in the pivotal role of Sybylla is Philippa Northeast (known for her work in ‘Territory’ and ‘The Newsreader’). She is supported by a strong cast including Christopher Chung as Harry, Anna Chancellor as Mrs Bossier, Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen, Kate Mulvany as Augusta, and Alexander England as Julius. Other notable actors joining the production are Jake Dunn, Sherry-Lee Watson, and Miah Madden.

The creative force behind this adaptation is led by executive producer and writer Liz Doran, celebrated for her previous work on acclaimed series such as ‘Barons’ and ‘Please Like Me’. Joining her as executive producers are Chloe Rickard from Jungle Entertainment and director Alyssa McClelland. McClelland will also be at the helm for the first three episodes, while Anne Renton, who also serves as co-producer, will direct episodes four to six.

Liz Doran expressed immense pride in collaborating with an “incredible team of creatives” to breathe new life into Franklin’s “rollicking tale of a young woman’s quest to determine her own life.” Executive Producer Chloe Rickard hailed the project as a dream collaboration, commending the partnership with Netflix and the perfect casting of Philippa Northeast as the “rebellious and witty” Sybylla.

Minyoung Kim, Netflix Vice President of Content, APAC, described ‘My Brilliant Career’ as a “timeless Australian story,” emphasizing the continued relevance of its core themes today. She praised the stunning South Australian locations and commended the high level of talent assembled for the production.

Kate Croser, CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation, welcomed Netflix and Jungle Entertainment back to Adelaide. “We’re proud to support this exciting new series, which highlights our world-class South Australian crew, our endlessly beautiful locations, and our thriving screen production capability,” she stated. South Australian producer Paul Ranford, known for his work on ‘Stateless’ and ‘Territory’, is leading the local crew, bringing extensive on-ground experience to the project.

The visual aesthetics of the series are being crafted by a distinguished team, including Felicity Abbott as production designer, Kieran Fowler and Marden Dean as directors of photography, and Mariot Kerr as costume designer. Hair and makeup are expertly managed by Zeljka Stanin, while casting duties are handled by Nikki Barrett and Nathan Toth.

First published in 1901, Miles Franklin’s ‘My Brilliant Career’ quickly resonated with young Australian women of its era, who found in Sybylla’s journey a powerful reflection of their own aspirations for freedom and self-determination. With this ambitious new screen adaptation, Netflix and Jungle Entertainment aim to rekindle that enduring spirit and introduce this profound story to a new generation of viewers across the globe.
