Reliance Joins Hands with Muttiah Muralitharan to Disrupt India’s Sports Drink Market with ‘Spinner’

Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL) has partnered with legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan to launch ‘Spinner’, an affordable sports drink priced at just Rs 10 for a 150 ml bottle. This move is set to challenge premium brands like Gatorade and Powerade, which sell at nearly double the price.

RCPL’s collaboration with Muttiah Beverages—which already bottles Campa soft drinks—will produce Spinner at its Mysore plant. The product is expected to hit retail stores nationwide by next week, well ahead of the summer season.

  • Ultra-Affordable Pricing: At Rs 10 per bottle, Spinner aims to make sports drinks accessible to a wider audience.
  • Strategic Manufacturing: Bottled at Muttiah Beverages’ Mysore facility, which also handles Campa soft drinks production.
  • Retailer Readiness: Stocks are already being placed for distribution ahead of the peak summer season.
  • Market Disruption Potential: The Indian sports drink market is worth Rs 240 crore but has struggled to expand due to high pricing. Analysts believe Spinner’s mass pricing strategy could significantly grow the category over the next five years.

While energy drinks like Red Bull and Sting have established a presence in India, the sports drink segment remains niche and price-sensitive. Three years ago, Coca-Cola launched Limca Sportz, featuring Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra as brand ambassador. Meanwhile, PepsiCo’s Gatorade retails at Rs 50 for a 500 ml bottle, making Spinner a much more affordable alternative.

Reliance has deepened its partnership with Muralitharan, having previously collaborated with his company Ceylon Beverage International, a major beverage can manufacturer in Sri Lanka. Industry sources suggest Reliance might acquire distribution rights for some of Ceylon Beverages’ brands in India.

With Spinner, Reliance is poised to revolutionize the Indian sports drink market by making hydration solutions more affordable. This aggressive pricing strategy could drive mass adoption, setting the stage for a summer showdown with global beverage giants.
