PM Modi Sees Vast Opportunities in India’s ‘Concert Economy’ Following Coldplay’s Successful Tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted significant potential in India’s “concert economy” following the success of Coldplay’s recent performances in the country. He emphasized the need for state governments and private entities to collaborate in developing infrastructure to support this burgeoning sector.

Coldplay’s concerts in Ahmedabad and Mumbai have set new records, with the band becoming the group with the most stadium concerts in the 21st century. The Ahmedabad shows alone attracted over 223,000 spectators, underscoring the immense demand for live music events in India.

During the Utkarsh Odisha conclave, Prime Minister Modi discussed India’s growing appeal as a destination for live entertainment. He noted that the country’s rich heritage, natural beauty, and spirituality attract people worldwide, presenting opportunities for concert-based tourism and job creation.

In addition to the “concert economy,” PM Modi highlighted other emerging sectors such as wedding tourism and wellness, which are contributing to India’s economic growth. He emphasized the importance of developing infrastructure to support these sectors, including event management, artist development, and security.

The success of Coldplay’s tour is part of a broader trend, with global music stars increasingly performing in India. Artists like Dua Lipa and Maroon 5 have held concerts in Mumbai, and upcoming performances by Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, and Green Day are planned. This surge in live events is attributed to the country’s substantial youth population and increased disposable income among affluent Indians.

Live concerts are contributing significantly to India’s leisure economy, with expectations of substantial economic impact through associated spending on travel, accommodation, and merchandise. The live entertainment market in India is projected to reach around $1.7 billion by 2026.
