Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Freedom at Midnight’ Brings Iconic Indian History to Life on SonyLIV

Following the critical acclaim of Rocket Boys, producer Nikkhil Advani has returned with another ambitious historical series, Freedom at Midnight, which streams on SonyLIV from November 15. Inspired by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre’s landmark book, the series captures India’s monumental journey from British rule to an independent democracy, spotlighting influential figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, and others who shaped the nation’s future.

Advani, co-producing and directing the series, aims to transport viewers into pivotal moments of Indian history, including high-stakes meetings between key leaders. He has adapted historical events with a blend of integrity and creative interpretation, crafting conversations that invite viewers into iconic spaces like Jinnah’s and the Viceroy’s study to witness behind-the-scenes dynamics. While sticking to historical authenticity, Advani believes the story remains relevant, underscoring a modern perspective on patriotism.

Bringing gravitas to the historical roles, Sidhant Gupta stars as Jawaharlal Nehru, with Arif Zakaria as Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Malishka Mendonsa as Sarojini Naidu. Advani wanted each actor to embody the stature of these historical figures. The series also includes Ira Dubey as Fatima Jinnah and Rajesh Kumar as Liaquat Ali Khan.

In the spirit of reflecting India’s complex legacy, Advani integrates multiple perspectives, exploring not only the contributions of Nehru, Gandhi, and Patel but also highlighting BR Ambedkar, Maulana Azad, and Sarojini Naidu. According to Advani, these figures laid the foundation of democracy, allowing future generations the freedom to question and build on their legacy.

With Freedom at Midnight, Advani hopes to inspire a re-examination of patriotism, likening it to Rocket Boys’ theme of nation-building. He acknowledges the risk of controversy, yet insists on telling a story that has personal resonance, reminding audiences of the sacrifices and debates that made democracy possible.
