Bollywood veteran Naseeruddin Shah has joined ‘Far from Home,’ a short documentary focusing on the challenging circumstances of Afghan refugees in India, as an executive producer. This move marks the first time the acclaimed actor has taken on the role of executive producer for a documentary film, underscoring the project’s urgent and vital message.
The documentary, titled ‘Far from Home,’ is directed by award-winning journalist Ankita M. Kumar and tells the story of Samira Faizi, an Afghan refugee woman and her family who arrived in India in 2021 following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
The film details Faizi’s struggle to build a new life amidst a changing political environment in India that is increasingly complex for refugees. Specifically, the documentary sheds light on the situation of Muslim Afghan refugees who are excluded from pathways to citizenship due to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), leaving them in a precarious position with no country to return to.
The project is supported by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and is also produced by Emmy-winning producer Brent E. Huffman.
In a statement, Shah emphasized his belief in the lasting value of documentary cinema: “I’ve always believed the most important function of cinema is to act as a record of its times. Since it is the only medium that can do that, I consider documentaries to be of more value for posterity than features.”
The documentary has already gained recognition, including being a finalist for the prestigious Japan Prize and earning runner-up for Best Short Documentary at various festivals.
