The Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) was launched at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, marking a significant step towards empowering India’s creative and digital workforce.
The IICT aims to become a national hub for the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) sector. The institute has already commenced operations, with support from major tech companies like NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Star India, and Adobe, who will collaborate on its courses.
Established by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with FICCI and CII, the IICT is envisioned as a National Centre of Excellence, similar to prestigious institutions like IIT and IIM.
The first phase of IICT is located at the NFDC Building, Pedder Road, Mumbai, and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including:
- Gaming Labs
- Animation Labs
- Edit and Sound Suites
- Virtual Production Setups
- Immersive Studios
- A Preview Theatre
- Smart Classrooms
The second phase will see the development of a dedicated 10-acre campus at Film City, Goregaon, further expanding the institute’s capabilities. In the coming years, the government plans to roll out regional centers across India to decentralize access and foster creative ecosystems nationwide.
The institute will focus on training, incubation, innovation, research and development, and policy development. It aims to create numerous opportunities for young creators, technologists, and entrepreneurs in India.This initiative signals the government’s commitment to scaling India’s soft power and creative economy on the global stage.
