The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has formally requested the Maharashtra government to grant tax exemption to the recently released film ‘Chhaava’, starring Vicky Kaushal as Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. This appeal aims to make the film more accessible to a broader audience, allowing the inspiring story of the Maratha warrior to reach as many people as possible.
In an official statement, FWICE emphasized the cultural and educational significance of ‘Chhaava’, highlighting its portrayal of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to duty. The federation believes that making the film tax-free would facilitate wider viewership, especially among the youth, fostering a deeper understanding of Maratha history and heritage.
The letter addressed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis states, “We appeal that the movie reaches a wider audience as the legacy and courage of this great Maratha king should be known to the generations to come. Our government strongly believes in ‘Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah’, and this movie portrays exactly the same sentiments through the life story of the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.”
Echoing FWICE‘s sentiments, the Mumbai Dabbawala Association has also urged the Maharashtra government to declare ‘Chhaava’ tax-free. The association highlighted their historical connection to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, noting that their ancestors served in his army. Subhash Talekar, president of the association, emphasized that both Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj are revered figures within their community. Granting the film tax-free status would honor this legacy and educate the public about the Maratha warrior’s contributions.
Since its release on February 14, ‘Chhaava’ has garnered significant attention and appreciation from audiences. According to trade tracking website Sacnilk, the film’s worldwide collection stands at Rs 195.60 crore, reflecting its commercial success and the public’s interest in historical narratives.
The collective appeals from FWICE and the Mumbai Dabbawala Association underscore the cultural importance of ‘Chhaava’ and its potential impact on society. Granting the film tax-free status in Maharashtra would not only honor the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj but also ensure that his inspiring story reaches a wider audience, fostering a deeper appreciation for India’s rich history.
