The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has extended the deadline for public comments on its “Report on AI Governance Guidelines Development.” Originally set for January 27, 2025, the new deadline is yet to be announced. This extension allows stakeholders more time to review and provide feedback on the proposed guidelines.
In late 2023, the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India established an Advisory Group to address the regulatory landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) in India. This led to the formation of a sub-committee on ‘AI Governance and Guidelines Development’ on November 9, 2023, tasked with providing actionable recommendations for AI governance in India. The sub-committee released its recommendations in the form of the AI Governance Guidelines Report on January 6, 2025.
Key Highlights of the Report
- Principle-Based Approach: The report advocates for a principle-based approach to AI governance, emphasizing transparency, accountability, safety, reliability, robustness, privacy, security, fairness, non-discrimination, human-centered values, and inclusive and sustainable innovation.
- Regulatory Framework: It proposes a combination of voluntary commitments from AI developers and deployers, along with sectoral and risk-based regulations, to ensure responsible AI usage.
- Whole-of-Government Approach: The report recommends establishing an Inter-Ministerial AI Coordination Committee to monitor AI use, obtain information from the AI sector, and regulate AI development in India.
The extension of the public consultation period provides stakeholders—including AI developers, deployers, data providers, and end-users—additional time to review the guidelines and submit their feedback. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that the AI governance framework is comprehensive, balanced, and aligned with India’s AI aspirations while safeguarding public interests.
