Reliance Industries Breaks Ground on First of 500 CBG Plants in Andhra Pradesh: A Leap Towards Sustainable Energy

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has marked a significant milestone in its green energy initiatives by breaking ground on the first of 500 Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants in Andhra Pradesh. This ambitious project involves an investment of ₹65,000 crore and aims to establish integrated CBG hubs across the state, driving a transformative shift towards clean energy and sustainable development.

The inaugural CBG plant, located in Kanigiri, Prakasam district, was launched with a capital investment of ₹139 crore. This facility will utilize innovative technology to convert Napier grass, grown on barren and waste lands, into bio-gas. The project is expected to generate substantial livelihood opportunities for rural communities by providing fixed prices and lease revenues to farmers cultivating the grass.

Once fully operational, the 500 CBG plants will produce 40 lakh tonnes of clean CBG and 1.1 million metric tonnes of organic fertilizer annually. This initiative is projected to create 2.5 lakh jobs for rural youth, revitalizing the state’s economy and contributing to India’s broader goals of energy self-sufficiency and carbon neutrality.

The byproduct of these plants, one crore tonnes of Fermented Organic Manure, will help reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers, transforming 15 lakh acres of barren land into fertile farmland and boosting farmer incomes.

Andhra Pradesh IT & Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh laid the foundation stone for the project, highlighting Reliance’s long-standing commitment to investing in the state. The government has provided supportive measures, including policy incentives and streamlined regulatory approvals, to facilitate this initiative.

Reliance Executive Director P M S Prasad emphasized the project’s socio-economic benefits, stating, “We see this project as more than energy production. It will uplift communities and boost local economies, driving Andhra Pradesh’s clean energy ambitions forward”.

The launch of Reliance’s CBG plants in Andhra Pradesh marks a significant step towards a sustainable energy future. By combining green energy production with economic development, this initiative is poised to transform the state’s energy landscape while contributing to India’s national goals of energy security and environmental sustainability.
