Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster, is set to advance its ambitious plans for Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology, which will enable live telecasts of TV channels on smartphones without requiring an internet connection. Following successful trials conducted in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and Saankhya Labs, the broadcaster aims to roll out this innovative technology within the next year.

The trials, which began in various cities including Delhi, have shown positive results using both high-power and low-power transmitters. Officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) confirmed that the D2M experiments have been successful so far. However, further advancements will necessitate the installation of transmitters on cellular towers and the integration of specialized chips into mobile
Devices.

“Live broadcasting directly to mobile devices is achieved using broadcast signals similar to those used in TV and radio,” an official explained. This approach allows for high-quality streaming of both video and audio without dependence on internet speed or stability, ensuring a seamless viewing experience.

The government has expressed strong support for D2M technology as a means to expand digital access across India. In 2019, an MoU was signed to collaborate on research related to D2M broadcasting, rural broadband, and convergence with 5G technologies. The government is keen on leveraging this technology to provide multimedia content to a vast population that still relies on 3G services.

During a recent industry conclave, officials highlighted that D2M technology could significantly enhance content consumption in rural areas, providing quality video content without burdening existing internet infrastructure. The potential reach is substantial, with estimates suggesting that nearly 80 crore smartphones are currently in use across the country.

As part of its strategy, Prasar Bharati plans to initiate pilot projects in 19 cities to test the feasibility and effectiveness of D2M technology. These pilots aim to demonstrate how the technology can be implemented effectively while addressing challenges such as device compatibility and consumer adoption.

Apurva Chandra, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, noted that while the technology is mature and available, it requires specific hardware in devices to receive broadcast signals. He emphasized the need for a citywide pilot trial to showcase its potential before moving towards commercial deployment.
