PM Modi Unveils ‘Sarvam Kaze’: India’s First Indigenous AI Smart-Glass

In a landmark moment for Indian technology, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the India AI Impact Expo 2026 by unveiling Sarvam Kaze—the nation’s first indigenous AI-powered smart-glass. During a high-tech walkthrough at Bharat Mandapam on February 16, the Prime Minister was the first to test the futuristic wearable, which moves artificial intelligence from smartphone screens directly into the real world.

Developed by Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI, the Sarvam Kaze is a sleek, spectacles-like device designed to “listen, understand, respond, and capture” everything the user sees in real-time. This “Designed in India, Built in India” gadget is set to officially hit the consumer market in May 2026, marking a significant milestone in India’s quest for technological sovereignty.

The Sarvam Kaze isn’t just a wearable camera; it is a full-stack AI assistant integrated into eyewear. Unlike global competitors that rely heavily on cloud processing, the Kaze utilizes Sarvam Edge technology to ensure low latency and data privacy.

  • Real-World Intelligence: The device sees through the user’s eyes, providing context-aware assistance for tasks like document digitization and real-time translation.
  • Multilingual Mastery: Powered by the Bulbul V3 speech model, it supports natural, accent-rich voice interactions in 11 Indian languages (expanding to 22).
  • Sovereign Design: Built on the Sarvam platform, users can create custom “agentic” experiences, allowing the glasses to manage emails or navigate complex workflows autonomously.

Founded by Dr. Vivek Raghavan and Dr. Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam AI has rapidly emerged as a leader in the Indic AI space. The startup was recently selected under the ₹10,372 crore IndiaAI Mission to develop the country’s first sovereign Large Language Model (LLM).

The unveiling of Sarvam Kaze follows a string of recent breakthroughs from the firm, including Sarvam Akshar (for complex document OCR) and Sarvam Studio (for multilingual content creation). Co-founder Pratyush Kumar shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the Prime Minister’s walkthrough involved testing the device’s real-time response capabilities as he navigated the expo floor.

The launch of Sarvam Kaze aligns with the government’s vision to democratize technology. Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government has already:

  1. Onboarded 38,000+ GPUs for a common compute facility.
  2. Established 27 India Data and AI labs.
  3. Supported over 13,000 students for AI talent development.

By integrating AI into a wearable format, India is positioning itself to lead the “Agentic AI” revolution, where technology becomes a seamless, invisible part of daily life.

Key Highlights:

  • Indigenous Innovation: PM Modi unveiled ‘Sarvam Kaze,’ India’s first home-grown AI smart-glass developed by Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI.
  • Market Launch: The wearable device, which supports 11 Indian languages and real-time visual understanding, will be available to the public in May 2026.
  • Technological Leap: The glasses utilize “Sovereign AI” to process data locally, ensuring privacy and instant response without relying solely on the cloud.
  • National Vision: This launch is a centerpiece of the ₹10,372 crore IndiaAI Mission, aimed at creating an independent and inclusive AI ecosystem for 1.4 billion citizens.
