Neeraj Mittal, the current Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), will continue to hold the additional charge of Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) until June 11, 2025. This extension comes as the incumbent MeitY Secretary, S. Krishnan, has extended his leave of absence.
Mittal, a 1992-batch IAS officer, was initially given the additional charge on June 2, 2025, for a period of five days, following Krishnan’s initial leave request. With Krishnan’s leave now extended, the government has issued a fresh order, ensuring continuity in leadership at MeitY during this period.
As the Secretary of DoT, Neeraj Mittal has been at the forefront of significant reforms and initiatives in India’s telecom sector, including the widespread rollout of 5G technology, crucial spectrum management policies, and efforts to boost indigenous manufacturing within the industry. His temporary dual role is expected to foster greater synergy between the government’s telecom and digital technology policy arms, especially at a time when both sectors are experiencing rapid advancements and critical policy discussions.
S. Krishnan, a senior IAS officer of the 1989 batch, has been serving as the full-time MeitY Secretary since September 2023. His responsibilities at MeitY involve promoting e-governance, fostering electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, developing IT and ITeS industries, overseeing internet governance, and ensuring a secure cyberspace.
Mittal’s continuation in this crucial additional capacity underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining momentum in India’s digital transformation journey. His extensive experience in various administrative positions, including as Principal Secretary of Information Technology in Tamil Nadu and a Senior Advisor at the World Bank, positions him well to manage the responsibilities of MeitY during this interim period.
