The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has announced the launch of an e-auction for 730 private FM radio channels across 234 newly uncovered cities in India. This marks the third phase of the Private FM Radio Phase-III rollout, aimed at expanding FM radio coverage to underserved regions, enhancing local content, and boosting employment opportunities.
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal for these e-auctions in August 2024, with a reserve price of Rs. 784.87 crore. This expansion is part of the government’s continued efforts to fulfill the unmet demand for FM radio services, especially in smaller cities and towns.
Under the Private FM Radio Phase III Policy, the annual license fee for these channels will be charged at 4 percent of gross revenue, excluding GST. The base prices for the auction are aligned with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommendations from 2022. The last date for submitting applications for the e-auction is set for November 18, 2024.
This initiative is expected to foster greater diversity in local content, promote local dialects and cultures, and support the ‘vocal for local’ movement. Additionally, the rollout is likely to generate new employment opportunities in the radio broadcasting sector, contributing to the growth of the local economy.
By expanding FM radio services to these 234 cities, this move will bridge the current gap in private FM radio broadcasting and ensure a broader reach of entertainment and information to previously uncovered areas.
