Korea Leads the Future of Asian Streaming at BCWW 2023

The Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA), in collaboration with the Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), successfully held the Korea in View @BCWW event in Seoul on August 29, emphasizing Korea’s pivotal role in shaping the future of streaming in Asia. Part of a three-day global broadcasting content convention, the event attracted over 300 delegates, underscoring Korea’s continued leadership in the streaming industry.

Eun Young Kang, Director of the Broadcast & Advertisement Policy Division at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, kicked off the event with a welcome address, setting the tone for discussions around Korea’s content boom and its strategies to navigate the current industry adjustment period. Marianne Lee, Chief of Content Acquisition and Development at Viu, highlighted the significant rise in production costs over the last decade and called for greater collaboration to adapt and optimize revenue streams.

Hyun Park, CEO of Alquimista Media, discussed how Korea and Asia can seize opportunities created by disruptions in the U.S. entertainment sector, including the pandemic and Hollywood strikes. Vivek Couto, Executive Director of Media Partners Asia, revealed that global consumption of Asian content reached 14 billion hours in 2023, with Korean content leading viewership in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Couto also described Korea’s streaming industry as being in its “second innings,” with strong prospects in advertising and bundled pay-TV services.

Additional insights came from Ana Bautista of BBC Studios, who emphasized deeper partnerships in Asia, and Changhoon Lee of SK Broadband, who discussed AI-driven personalization as a key competitive advantage. Chris Mottershead of Publica highlighted ongoing challenges with advertising revenue and measurement but noted progress in unifying data across platforms.

The event reinforced Korea’s influential role in the global streaming industry, as it continues to innovate and adapt to the fast-evolving media landscape.
