KOLAB 2024, an Indo-Korean music collaboration program, concluded with a grand listening session in Mumbai on November 13, 2024, hosted by the Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS) and the Korean Music Copyright Association (KOMCA). The event showcased the results of a cross-cultural songwriting camp, which brought together 19 artists from India and South Korea for a week of creative collaboration. During this time, they blended Indian and Korean musical elements, producing compositions with global appeal.
Held at the True School of Music, Vijaybhoomi University, the camp took place from November 6-12 and was guided by Bunty Bains and Mayur Puri, Creative Directors at the camp. The artists participated in immersive sessions on songwriting, composition, and production, fostering a deep, artistic exchange between the two countries.
Reflecting on the initiative, Mayur Puri, lyricist and board member at IPRS, noted that KOLAB provided a platform where young creators could express themselves freely, producing original music without the constraints of commercial success. The collaborative process helped merge the rich musical traditions of both nations, sparking creativity and innovation among participants.
Kim Kibeom, a board member at KOMCA, emphasized how the program allowed Korean artists to expand their artistic horizons by immersing themselves in the diverse Indian music culture. He highlighted the transformative experience it offered for them, allowing for a fresh perspective on their creative processes.
As Bunty Bains pointed out, the camp’s creative freedom led to the production of exceptional compositions that beautifully blended Indian and Korean legacies. The songs produced reflected the synergy between the artists, combining traditional elements with contemporary sounds.
Rakesh Nigam, CEO of IPRS, echoed this sentiment, expressing his optimism for the future of KOLAB and its ability to provide emerging artists with global exposure and the opportunity to create meaningful, impactful music.
The event not only showcased the fruits of the Indo-Korean collaboration but also marked the beginning of new artistic partnerships, paving the way for continued cultural exchange and recognition on the global music stage.
