JioStar’s Debut: A Streaming Giant Emerges with 503 Million Users

JioStar, the newly formed media and entertainment powerhouse resulting from the merger of Reliance and Disney’s India operations, has made a grand entrance. The company reported a revenue of Rs 10,006 crore and boasts a staggering 503 million monthly active users (MAUs) on its JioHotstar platform as of March 2025.

The merged entity, which combines the strengths of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, has quickly become a dominant force in the Indian streaming landscape. JioHotstar reached the milestone of 100 million paid users within just five weeks of its launch on February 14, 2025. This rapid growth was significantly fueled by major sporting events, including the IPL and ICC Champions Trophy, along with JioStar’s extensive content library.

The 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) proved to be a major catalyst for JioStar’s success. The opening weekend alone saw a record-breaking 1.4 billion digital views, a 35% increase year-on-year. Television viewership also saw a significant boost, with a reach of 253 million, up 14% from the previous year. The first week of IPL 2025 on JioHotstar witnessed a 38% growth in viewership, driven by a 47% increase in TV video viewers and a 46% rise in overall watch time.

Beyond the IPL, the JioStar network showcased a range of prominent sporting events, including the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy and India’s matches against England. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final achieved a record 4.3 TVR, surpassing the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 by 23%. JioStar’s linear TV network commands a 34% market share across TV entertainment and reaches over 760 million monthly viewers nationwide. Star Plus, under the JioStar umbrella, maintains its leadership in the Hindi GEC space, with six of the top ten shows.
