The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has reaffirmed its stance that India’s media ecosystem is robust and does not require validation from foreign organizations. This assertion comes in response to concerns over India’s ranking in the 2024 Global Press Freedom Index.

Minister of State for MIB, Dr. L Murugan, highlighted India’s extensive media presence, which includes approximately 1,45,000 printed publications, over 900 private satellite TV channels, and a thriving digital media sector encompassing OTT platforms, e-newspapers, and social media-based news channels. He emphasized that India’s judicial system ensures the protection of constitutional rights, including press freedom.

Dr. Murugan stated, “India has a vibrant press and media ecosystem, which does not need validation from foreign organizations.” He underscored the role of the Press Council of India (PCI), an autonomous statutory body chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge, in addressing grievances related to press freedom and maintaining media standards.

The PCI plays a crucial role in safeguarding media rights by addressing complaints of physical attacks on journalists and taking suo motu cognizance of pressing issues concerning media standards under the Press Council Act, 1978.

The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting journalists and ensuring press freedom. However, it maintains that India’s media ecosystem is self-sufficient and does not require external validation.

The MIB’s stance reflects a broader narrative of India’s media landscape being vibrant and independent. As the country continues to navigate global rankings and assessments, the government remains confident in its ability to safeguard press freedom and maintain a robust media ecosystem.
