I-League Kickoff in Jeopardy: Clubs Stand United Over Broadcast Dispute

As the 18th season of the I-League approaches its scheduled kickoff, the league finds itself embroiled in a broadcast deal impasse. The I-League Clubs Association has urged the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to delay the league until the matter is resolved, with 12 participating clubs uniting in a collective stance.

The primary contention revolves around the AIFF’s failure to finalize a broadcast deal with Sony Network. Clubs have expressed their frustration, highlighting that the absence of a confirmed broadcaster jeopardizes the league’s visibility and viability. In a letter to the AIFF president, the association demanded confirmation of Sony Network as the official broadcaster by 8 PM on Thursday, failing which the clubs vowed not to commence the league as scheduled.

“For the survival and future of our clubs and the I-League as a whole, broadcast coverage is essential,” the letter stated, emphasizing the critical role of media partnerships in the league’s sustainability.

Adding to the unrest, hefty fines imposed on clubs for Club Licensing failures have further fueled discontent. The fines, averaging ₹10 lakh per club and in some cases reaching ₹25 lakh, were communicated to clubs just a day before the season’s start.

Clubs argued the fines were unfair, particularly those related to stadium infrastructure, as most venues are government-owned. “Clubs renting stadiums for limited periods cannot be penalized for issues beyond their control,” the association asserted.

Despite their grievances, the clubs clarified they are not refusing to participate but are seeking fair resolutions. “We are ready to play as soon as the broadcast deal is confirmed, even if it means delaying the league by a few weeks,” the letter read.

This unified stand highlights the broader implications of the dispute, with clubs stressing that the issue transcends the immediate season and impacts the league’s long-term future.

While the clubs’ collective stance suggests a potential delay, some teams have proceeded with preparations. Gokulam Kerala owner VC Praveen confirmed that his team is already in Hyderabad, awaiting clarity on the league’s status.

With opening matches scheduled between Sreenidi Deccan FC and Gokulam Kerala FC in Hyderabad at 4 PM, and Inter Kashi versus Sporting Club Bengaluru in Kalyani at 7 PM, it remains uncertain if the season will proceed as planned.

The I-League’s 18th season faces a precarious start, with clubs united in their demand for transparency and fairness. As the clock ticks closer to kickoff, the AIFF must navigate the delicate balance of resolving financial and logistical disputes to ensure the league’s credibility and future growth.
