FM Sitharaman to launch a portal having repository of social, economic, research data today

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to launch the NITI NCAER States Economic Forum portal today, April 1, 2025. This comprehensive digital repository aims to provide extensive data on social, economic, and fiscal parameters for Indian states, covering a timeline from financial year 1990-91 to 2022-23.

The NITI NCAER portal is designed to enhance accessibility to critical data and insights for policymakers, researchers, and analysts. It comprises four main components:

  • State Reports: These reports offer an overview of the macroeconomic and fiscal landscape across 28 Indian states, detailing key indicators related to demographics, economic structure, and fiscal performance.
  • Data Repository: A well-organized database that provides direct access to extensive datasets categorized into five areas: demography, economic structure, fiscal data, health, and education.
  • State Fiscal and Economic Dashboard: This visual tool presents graphical trends of key economic variables over time and allows users to access raw data through summary tables.
  • Research and Commentary: This section features expert analysis and commentary on state finances, fiscal policies, and financial management at both state and national levels.

The portal aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of macroeconomic, fiscal, demographic, and socio-economic trends in India. By consolidating sectoral data into one accessible platform, it addresses the ongoing need for comprehensive information. The initiative is expected to empower stakeholders with the tools necessary for informed decision-making and policy formulation.

According to NITI Aayog’s press release, “This portal will serve as a comprehensive research hub that enables users to track historical trends, identify emerging economic patterns, and formulate evidence-based policies.” It will also allow benchmarking of state data against national figures and facilitate informed debates among policymakers and researchers.

The launch of the NITI NCAER States Economic Forum portal is anticipated to significantly impact policymaking in India. By providing easy access to critical data, it will enhance transparency and accountability in state finances while encouraging collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and the public.

As the portal goes live today, it marks a significant step towards improving data-driven decision-making in India’s governance framework.
