Durga Puja Delivers Box Office Success for Three Major Bengali Films

This year’s Durga Puja festival brought excitement not only for its traditional celebrations but also for Bengali cinema, as three major films—’Tekka,’ ‘Bohurupi,’ and ‘Shastri’—hit theatres just before the festive season. All three films, released on October 8, 2024, have been met with enthusiasm, with cinephiles flocking to theatres to enjoy the cinematic offerings.

According to reports from the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA), the films have generated considerable buzz at the box office. ‘Bohurupi’ has taken the lead as the top performer, followed closely by ‘Tekka’ and ‘Shastri.’

Zinia Sen, one of the producers of ‘Bohurupi,’ shared that the film performed exceptionally well on Mahasaptami (October 10), with 132 almost full shows and six houseful shows in theatres across the region. Meanwhile, ‘Tekka’ enjoyed 76 almost houseful shows, and ‘Shastri’ reported 19 almost houseful shows on the same day.

The festive season has provided a boost to the box office numbers, with ‘Bohurupi’ earning over ₹2.1 crore so far. ‘Tekka,’ produced by and starring Bengali cinema’s leading actor Dev, also garnered significant attention, crossing ₹1.5 crore within just three days of its release. On social media, Dev shared his excitement, calling ‘Tekka’ a potential “blockbuster” and thanking fans for their overwhelming support.

Though ‘Shastri,’ starring Mithun Chakraborty, has not yet reached the same numbers as its competitors, it still managed to earn over ₹25 lakh by Mahasaptami, showing that it, too, is resonating with viewers.

This Durga Puja season has proven to be a success for Bengali cinema. With multiple films captivating audiences, industry stakeholders are optimistic about the future of regional cinema, especially during festival releases. Dev, while celebrating the success of ‘Tekka,’ also expressed support for the entire Bengali film industry, rooting for the triumph of all three films. He stated, “I hope ‘Tekka’ stands out, but my wish is for the entire industry to thrive during this festive period.”
As these films continue to run in theatres, it will be interesting to see how they perform over the coming weeks. With the positive response so far, the films are poised for continued success as audiences seek entertainment during the festive season.
