Decathlon appoints Javier Lopez as new CEO

Decathlon has appointed Javier López as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Barbara Martin Coppola, who held the position since March 2022. This announcement was made on March 28, 2025, and aligns with the company’s strategic direction under newly appointed Chairman Julien Leclercq.

Javier López brings over 26 years of experience within Decathlon, having held various leadership roles throughout his tenure. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he served as the Global Chief Value Chain Officer and has also been the CEO of Decathlon Spain from 2015 to 2022 and led operations in Germany from 2012 to 2015. His extensive background in digital, logistics, and retail positions him well to lead Decathlon into its next phase of growth.

López expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am particularly honoured by the confidence of Julien and the Board of Directors as I take up my new position. I thank Barbara, with whom I have enjoyed working in the Executive Committee for the past three years.”

Under Barbara Martin Coppola’s leadership, Decathlon achieved significant milestones, including a 13% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2021 and an expansion of its e-commerce operations, which now contribute 20% of the company’s revenue. The company also designed the official outfits for 45,000 volunteers at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Chairman Julien Leclercq acknowledged Coppola’s contributions and expressed confidence in López’s ability to drive growth while maintaining Decathlon’s inclusive culture. He stated, “Today, Decathlon is increasingly recognised worldwide for its products and positive impact. As we enter a new phase in our history, I have every confidence in Javier’s ability to unite the team and identify new opportunities for sustainable growth.”

Javier López’s appointment as CEO marks a pivotal moment for Decathlon as it seeks to strengthen its market presence and commitment to making sports accessible for everyone.
