Bollywood star Varun Dhawan is optimistic about his debut OTT series, ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’, the India-set companion to the global spy franchise ‘Citadel’. Directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, the series marks the third chapter in the expansive universe, following ‘Citadel’ and the Italian spin-off, ‘Citadel: Diana’, which starred Matilda de Angelis.
In an interview with PTI, Varun expressed his excitement about the series, saying, “We’ve put in a lot of work, and seeing it come to fruition is amazing. The quality and how it looks already make me feel good about it. Everyone involved has given their best effort, and I believe this will push Indian cinema forward.”
‘Honey Bunny’, set to premiere on Prime Video on November 7, also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and is described as a fusion of a gritty spy thriller with a heartwarming love story. The plot revolves around Bunny (Varun), a stuntman, and Honey (Samantha), a struggling actress, who are drawn into a high-stakes world of action, espionage, and betrayal. Years later, their estranged relationship is tested as they must reunite to protect their daughter, Nadia.
The show’s narrative is penned by Sita R Menon, along with Raj & DK, and executive produced by Anthony and Joe Russo of Marvel fame, adding significant international appeal. Varun highlighted the rarity of such a project: “Having Amazon back it and the Russos on board was a big deal. This doesn’t happen often.”
Known for films like ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania,’ ‘Badlapur,’ ‘October,’ ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo,’ and ‘Bhediya’, Varun believes ‘Honey Bunny’ offers a fresh take on storytelling, blending high-octane action with emotional depth.
