X Corp Vows Crackdown on Illegal Content Amid MeitY Directive

X Corp, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating illegal content, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), from its global network. In a statement released on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the company emphasized its ongoing collaboration with local governments and law enforcement agencies to ensure a safer digital environment.

This announcement comes as a direct response to a strict mandate from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The Ministry recently flagged failures in preventing the generation of obscene and indecent content, specifically targeting the misuse of X’s AI-based service, Grok.

Elon Musk took to the platform to issue a stern warning to users attempting to bypass safety protocols using artificial intelligence.

“Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” Musk posted.

X Safety clarified that the platform’s enforcement actions include the immediate removal of offending material and the permanent suspension of responsible accounts. To strengthen its defense, X is conducting a comprehensive review of Grok’s technical and governance frameworks as directed by the Indian government.

On Friday, January 2, MeitY issued a directive requiring X Corp to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 72 hours. The government’s crackdown focuses on the prevention of:

  • Obscene and Nude Content: Generated or shared via AI tools.
  • Explicit Material: Targeting the dignity and safety of women and children.
  • Unlawful Transmission: Circulated through fake accounts or synthetic outputs.

The Ministry warned that non-compliance could result in X Corp losing its Safe Harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act. Without this immunity, the platform and its officers could face direct criminal and civil liability under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Indecent Representation of Women Act, and POCSO.

X Corp has been instructed to remove all existing unlawful content without tampering with evidence, ensuring that technical safeguards are robust enough to block future violations.

Key Highlights:

  • X’s Safety Pledge: X Corp is working with law enforcement to remove illegal content and CSAM, applying permanent bans to violators.
  • Grok AI Warning: Elon Musk warned that AI-generated illegal content will face the same severe penalties as manual uploads.
  • Government Deadline: India’s MeitY has given X Corp 72 hours to provide a compliance report on removing obscene and AI-generated explicit material.
  • Legal Jeopardy: Failure to comply may lead to the loss of safe harbour immunity and prosecution under the IT Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
