In a significant leadership change impacting both global cricket governance and the Indian sports media landscape, the International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. Gupta, a highly respected figure previously serving as CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar, will be the seventh CEO of the global cricketing body. His move has triggered a pivotal internal elevation at JioStar, with Ishan Chatterjee, formerly Chief Business Officer – Sports Revenue, SMB & Creators, stepping up to lead the company’s extensive sports division as its new Chief Executive.
Sanjog Gupta’s appointment to the top role at the ICC follows a rigorous global recruitment process that attracted over 2,500 applications from 25 countries. The ICC’s Nominations Committee, after a thorough shortlisting and evaluation, unanimously recommended Gupta for the position, a decision subsequently approved by ICC Chairman Jay Shah and ratified by the full ICC Board. Shah expressed his pleasure at the appointment, highlighting Gupta’s “extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization,” which he believes will be invaluable for the ICC’s ambitions, particularly in growing the game globally and deepening its roots in core markets, including its pursuit of cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Gupta brings over two decades of cross-functional experience in media, entertainment, and sports ecosystems. He began his career as a journalist and joined Star India (now JioStar) in 2010. Over the years, he held multiple leadership roles in content, programming, and strategy before becoming Head of Sports at Disney & Star India in 2020. Following the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star in November 2024, he was appointed CEO of JioStar Sports. Under his stewardship, the sports portfolio at Star India (and subsequently JioStar) scaled significantly, with a strong emphasis on long-term growth and operational efficiency, including playing a crucial role in developing multi-language, digital-first, and women-centric sports coverage.
“It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth and enjoys the passionate support of almost 2 billion fans worldwide,” said Sanjog Gupta. He added that cricket’s inclusion in the LA28 Olympics and rapid technology adoption could act as “force-multipliers” for the sport’s global movement.
Meanwhile, at JioStar, Ishan Chatterjee’s elevation to CEO of Sports and Live Experiences is a strategic move to ensure continuity and further accelerate the company’s dominance in the Indian sports media landscape. Chatterjee, who previously served as Chief Business Officer – Sports Revenue, SMB & Creator Monetisation, joined JioStar in 2024. He has over 20 years of experience across various roles at organizations like YouTube (where he was India Managing Director), Google Play, Google, McKinsey & Company, and Hindustan Unilever.
Uday Shankar, Vice Chairman of JioStar, announced Chatterjee’s appointment in an internal communication, praising his significant contributions, particularly during the recently concluded 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chatterjee’s expanded role will now encompass end-to-end oversight of JioStar’s sprawling sports vertical, including strategy, media rights acquisition, programming, partnerships, monetization, and viewer experience across both television and digital platforms. He will report to Kiran Mani, CEO of Digital at JioStar, and will work directly with Uday Shankar on major strategic projects aimed at transforming JioStar’s sports business and strengthening critical partnerships.
This leadership transition marks a new chapter for both the ICC, as it seeks to expand cricket’s global footprint and integrate it into major multi-sport events, and for JioStar, as it consolidates its position as a leading sports media powerhouse in India and beyond. The appointments are expected to usher in new strategic directions driven by leaders with deep understanding and experience in the evolving sports and media ecosystem.
