Rohit Vishwakarma Appointed Managing Editor of NDTV India, Signaling Major Editorial Shift

NDTV India today announced the strategic appointment of Rohit Vishwakarma as its new Managing Editor. This significant move signals a powerful editorial transformation for the news channel, aimed at fostering a newsroom driven by original thinking, inclusive storytelling, and impactful ground reportage.

Vishwakarma brings over two decades of extensive leadership experience across both broadcast and digital media platforms. He is widely recognized for his innovative content strategies, acute newsroom instincts, and remarkable ability to lead multilingual news operations. His appointment is a key step in NDTV India’s ongoing commitment to future-facing journalism, backed by vision, credibility, and a deep understanding of the evolving media landscape.

According to an official NDTV release, Vishwakarma’s personal journey from a tribal village in Chhattisgarh – a place where the sound of a train was once unheard – to leading top newsrooms in India stands as a testament to his ambition and the emergence of a truly representative Indian voice in journalism. An alumnus of IIMC and MICA, he began his media career with Star News. His impressive career trajectory includes senior editorial roles at prominent news organizations such as India TV, Aaj Tak, TV9, Editorji, NDTV 24×7, and most recently, RTV News Network, which he launched in 2023 as its Editorial Director.

One of Vishwakarma’s standout traits is his exceptional ability to lead and grow editorial operations across diverse languages, including Hindi, English, Marathi, and Telugu. Notably, he achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first non-Marathi editor to propel TV9 Marathi to the No. 1 position, a success he replicated in the Telugu market. In 2019, at just 36, he was named the youngest Managing Editor of a national news channel, underscoring his capability and foresight.

Vishwakarma is known for developing shows that consistently break the clutter and resonate deeply with audiences across “Bharat” (India). His notable programs include the sports show ‘Wah Cricket’ (with its popular segment ‘Match Ka Mujrim’), the finance show ‘Fund Ka Funda’, the crime show ‘Third Degree’, and the newsroom debate ‘Uncensored’. His dedication to ground reporting is well-documented, with his in-depth coverage of the lumpy skin disease epidemic and extensive election reportage across Uttar Pradesh bringing critical, often unheard, rural voices to national attention.

Beyond traditional broadcast, Vishwakarma is also credited with integrating a tech-first mindset into legacy media. At Editorji, he spearheaded an app-first content strategy. More recently, at RTV, he pioneered AI-enabled multilingual news experiences that empowered users to curate playlists, record reactions, and directly engage with stories, transforming passive consumption into active participation. His editorial leadership during the 2024 Andhra Pradesh elections, for instance, led to a large-scale ground survey that accurately predicted the incumbent government’s defeat and garnered over a lakh live viewers.

Commenting on his new role, Vishwakarma emphasized his vision: “News can no longer afford to speak from a pedestal. It has to speak from the ground up, and it must do so with honesty, humility, and purpose. NDTV has always stood for credibility. My goal is to build on that trust and take it to a generation that demands transparency, participation, and truth without filters.”

Rahul Kanwal, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of NDTV, welcomed the appointment, stating, “Rohit’s return is both a homecoming and a leap forward. His work speaks to the kind of newsroom we are building — grounded, bold, and built for a new India.”

With this strategic appointment, NDTV India significantly strengthens its editorial team. The channel is clearly moving toward a broader editorial reset, where storytelling reflects India’s complex realities and journalism firmly returns to the ground where it matters most.
