Mumbai’s Habitat Comedy Club Forced to Shut Doors After Political Vandalism Over Kunal Kamra’s ‘Traitor’ Jibe”

Mumbai’s iconic Habitat Comedy Club, a hub for stand-up artists and free expression, has announced its temporary shutdown following violent vandalism by Shiv Sena workers. The incident, triggered by comedian Kunal Kamra’s satirical remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has reignited debates about artistic freedom and political intolerance in India.

On March 23, 2025, Kunal Kamra performed at The Uni Continental Club in Khar West, where he parodied the song Bholi Si Surat from the 1997 film Dil To Pagal Hai. The comedian humorously labeled Shinde a “traitor” (gaddar), referencing his 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray that split the Shiv Sena and toppled the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Kamra’s lyrics included lines like:
“Shiv Sena first left the BJP, then Shiv Sena left Shiv Sena… Mantralaya se zyada Fadnavis ke godi mein mil jaye.”
The performance, shared widely on social media, drew sharp criticism from Shinde’s faction.

Shiv Sena workers stormed the venue on March 24, vandalizing property and threatening the club’s management. Videos showed party members smashing ceilings with chairs and shouting slogans against Kamra. Rahul Kanal, a Shinde faction leader, filed a police complaint accusing Kamra of defamation, leading to an FIR against the comedian.
Despite the violence, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned Kamra’s remarks but remained silent on the vandalism, stating, “Kunal Kamra should apologize. This will not be tolerated.”

Hours after the attack, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) arrived at the venue with hammers, citing “unauthorized construction” in the area. Officials claimed the club’s temporary shed violated civic norms, though critics allege the demolition was politically motivated. The BMC, currently under administrative control, faces accusations of acting under pressure from the ruling Mahayuti coalition.

In an emotional Instagram post, Habitat announced its closure, “We are shocked, worried, and broken. Artists are responsible for their views, but we’re targeted as proxies. We’re shutting down until we find a way to safeguard free expression without jeopardizing safety.”
The studio clarified it neither endorses nor controls performers’ content and apologized to those offended.

Kamra refused to apologize, asserting, “Freedom of speech isn’t just for praising the powerful. Mocking leaders isn’t illegal. Attacking a venue over a joke is like overturning a tomato truck for bad butter chicken.”
He emphasized readiness to face legal action but stood by his right to critique politicians.

The incident highlights growing tensions between creative expression and political sensitivity in India. While opposition leaders criticized the state’s selective condemnation of Kamra over the vandalism, Shinde’s faction doubled down on its stance. The club’s closure marks a worrying precedent for cultural spaces navigating India’s polarized climate.

Key Highlights:

  • Mumbai’s Habitat Comedy Club shut down after Shiv Sena workers vandalized it over Kunal Kamra’s political satire.
  • Kamra’s parody song mocking Eknath Shinde’s rebellion sparked FIRs and BMC-led demolition at the venue.
  • The club denounced threats to free expression, while Kamra defended his right to critique public figures.
  • The incident underscores rising clashes between artistic freedom and political intolerance.
