The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has released data indicating a significant number of Multi-System Operators (MSOs) have become non-compliant. As of April 30, 2025, a total of 1049 MSOs were found to have surrendered their registrations, had them expired, or were deemed non-compliant.
This leaves only 842 MSOs actively registered with the Ministry. The MIB’s report highlights its ongoing efforts to ensure stricter adherence to regulatory norms and enhance operational transparency within the cable television distribution sector.
The reasons for non-compliance, cancellation, rejection, or closure of MSO applications include suppression of vital information, failure to submit necessary documents, negative net worth, or non-payment of processing fees. Notably, 114 MSO applications faced cancellation or rejection due to these issues.
This development follows a similar trend observed in March 2025, when 1045 MSOs were reported as non-compliant, with 845 remaining registered. The consistent action by the Ministry underscores a firm stance on regulatory enforcement within the cable TV industry.
One of the critical conditions for MSO registration mandates compliance with the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and its associated rules, along with adherence to all registration terms. Failure to meet these requirements can lead to the cancellation or suspension of the granted permission. MSOs are also obligated to provide subscriber lists and other details as requested by the Ministry periodically.
The Ministry’s increased scrutiny aims to streamline the cable television ecosystem and ensure that operators adhere to the established guidelines.
