Minister of State for Communication opens global regulators conference

Minister of State for Communication, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, inaugurated the International Conference of Telecom Regulators, organized by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as part of the ongoing India Mobile Congress and World Telecom Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24) in New Delhi. This conference brought together global leaders in telecom regulation to discuss emerging trends in the sector.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Pemmasani highlighted the remarkable growth of India’s Information, Communications, and Telecom (ICT) sector, emphasizing the rapid deployment of 5G services and the nation’s swift adoption of digital technologies. He noted that India’s conducive regulatory environment has been a major factor in driving this expansion, fostering innovation in the digital economy. His remarks were echoed in an official statement by the Ministry of Communications.

Key industry figures, including Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Mats Granryd, Director General of GSMA, and Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of TRAI, were present during the inaugural event.

During the opening session, Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia’s message was delivered by TRAI Secretary Atul Chaudhary. Scindia emphasized the role of telecom regulators in safeguarding consumer interests while advancing regulatory frameworks. He highlighted the potential of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) to revolutionize communication technologies, expanding their applications across various sectors.

Scindia further urged global regulators to collaborate on crafting frameworks for OTT communication services, aligning with the theme of the conference, “Emerging Trends in Regulation.”

The conference featured three key sessions, with experts from around the world deliberating on critical technical and regulatory topics. One notable session on the “Regulatory Outlook of OTT Communication Services” addressed complex issues surrounding over-the-top (OTT) communication, focusing on areas such as consumer protection, law enforcement, and national security.

Delegates from over 30 countries registered for the event, with more than 150 participants, including 80 international delegates and 15 heads of regulators or ministers. Representatives from diverse sectors of the telecom industry actively participated in the discussions, further strengthening international cooperation in this space.

A key highlight of the conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TRAI and the Communications, Space & Technology (CST) regulator of Saudi Arabia, reinforcing cross-border collaboration in the ICT sector.

The event underscored India’s growing influence in the global telecommunications landscape and its continued commitment to innovation and regulatory excellence.
