In a major boost for India’s creative economy, WaveX, the startup accelerator under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FITT, IIT Delhi. This strategic partnership aims to catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship across the media, entertainment, broadcasting, and communication technology sectors.
The agreement was signed on January 6, 2026, in New Delhi, in the presence of MIB Secretary Sanjay Jaju. The collaboration seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial media applications, fostering a “future-ready” digital ecosystem.
Under the new framework, the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at IIT Delhi will serve as a primary knowledge partner. FITT’s role includes:
- Strategic Guidance: Providing operational blueprints for setting up specialized M&E incubation centers nationwide.
- Technical Expertise: Offering startups access to world-class research labs, mentorship, and Intellectual Property (IP) support.
- Collaborative Research: Facilitating engagement between other IITs and innovation hubs to scale media technologies.
WaveX, implemented through the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), will provide the necessary financial backing and policy framework to ensure these startups gain national and global visibility.
Secretary Sanjay Jaju emphasized that WaveX is envisioned as a “national catalyst” that will specifically target startups driving core technological disruption—such as AI-powered content tools, immersive technologies (XR), and advanced broadcasting hardware.
The partnership marks a shift toward self-reliance in a sector currently heavily dependent on imported technology. By leveraging IIT Delhi’s academic excellence, the initiative aims to support innovators building new applications on existing platforms as well as those creating entirely new tech stacks for the global market.
Dr. Nikhil Agarwal, Managing Director of FITT, stated that the partnership reflects a commitment to “technology-driven entrepreneurship” at the intersection of creativity and innovation.
Key Highlights:
- Strategic Alliance: MIB’s WaveX and FITT-IIT Delhi signed an MoU to boost innovation in media and broadcasting technology.
- Support Framework: FITT will provide technical mentorship and IP support, while WaveX offers funding and national visibility.
- Nationwide Impact: The initiative plans to strengthen incubation centers across India to nurture startups in AI, AVGC, and communication tech.
- Vision: The goal is to establish world-class facilities for media-tech startups to scale globally.
