MeitY to Hold Crucial Talks with Online Gaming Federations and Operators on Monday

In a significant development for India’s online gaming sector, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is scheduled to hold a meeting with representatives from online gaming federations and real-money gaming (RMG) operators on Monday, September 1, 2025. This will be the first direct engagement between the government and the industry since the enactment of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025.

The meeting comes at a crucial juncture, as the new law, which received Presidential assent on August 22, imposes a blanket ban on all online games with a monetary component. With major platforms having already shut down their real-money offerings, industry stakeholders are seeking clarity on a host of issues, including compliance requirements, the official date of the law’s notification, and the much-needed transition period.

This upcoming session follows a high-level meeting MeitY recently held with banks and payment firms to discuss the operational rollout of the new law and the blocking of transactions with offshore betting entities. The government’s multi-pronged approach underscores its commitment to enforcing the legislation, even as domestic operators raise concerns about a lack of prior consultation.

According to industry executives, many questions remain unanswered, and the meeting is expected to be a platform for a frank discussion on the path forward. This comes as the legal battle against the new law is already underway, with the Karnataka High Court recently hearing a petition challenging its constitutionality and directing the central government to file its response by September 8. The outcome of Monday’s talks is anticipated to be a major indicator of how the government intends to balance its regulatory goals with the industry’s economic concerns.
