Kashi to Dazzle with 10 Lakh Diyas for Dev Deepawali, Eco-Friendly Lamps to be a Key Highlight

In a magnificent display of faith and environmental consciousness, the holy city of Kashi is gearing up to celebrate Dev Deepawali on November 5, 2025. The Uttar Pradesh administration has announced that over 10 lakh diyas (earthen lamps) will illuminate the city’s famous crescent-shaped ghats, creating a breathtaking spectacle on the banks of the sacred River Ganga.

A major highlight of this year’s festivities will be the use of one lakh eco-friendly diyas crafted from cow dung. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make the celebration more sustainable and to promote environmental conservation. In addition to the stunning display of lights, the ghats are being adorned with facade lighting and decorative illuminations to heighten the grandeur of the event.

Dev Deepawali, celebrated 15 days after Diwali on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, is believed to be the day when the gods descend to Earth to take a holy dip in the Ganges. The festival commemorates Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

To enrich the spiritual and cultural experience, a four-day Ganga Mahotsav will precede the main event, starting on November 1. The festival will feature a laser show at Chet Singh Ghat that narrates mythological tales of Kashi, along with pollution-free green fireworks across the Ganga sands. The city is also witnessing a surge in bookings for hotels, guest houses, and boat cruises, as lakhs of devotees and tourists from around the world are expected to converge in Varanasi to witness this once-in-a-lifetime sight.

This year’s celebration, which has been declared a provincial fair by the Yogi Adityanath government, promises to be a historic fusion of divine tradition, vibrant festivity, and a strong message of environmental responsibility.
