At the India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) 2024 in Hyderabad, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), delivered a keynote address focused on the future of India’s gaming industry. He emphasized the government’s commitment to upskilling talent to help the country establish dominance in the global gaming market. The Ministry is collaborating with the Game Developer Association of India (GDAI) to develop high-quality talent on a large scale, with plans to support this growth through the establishment of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology.
Jaju stated that video gaming in India, driven by creativity and content, has significant potential. The GDAI, led by Sridhar Muppidi, aims to provide a cohesive platform for policy advocacy and industry collaboration to further strengthen India’s position in the global gaming market.
The conference, which has drawn over 6,000 attendees and features more than 100 global developers, is a key step toward shaping the future of the gaming industry. In a related announcement, Jaju also revealed the upcoming World Audio Video Entertainment Summit (WAVES), scheduled for February 2025 in New Delhi. This summit aims to bring together global innovators and industry leaders to explore the future of the media and entertainment (M&E) sector, focusing on collaboration, trade, and innovation.
Additionally, Jaju updated the industry on the Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology trials conducted by Prasar Bharati in collaboration with Saankhya Labs and IIT Kanpur. The Ministry is now focusing on rolling out this technology after successful proof-of-concept trials, which are seen as crucial for the growth of broadcasting and mobile communication technologies in India.
