Delhi Crime: Richie Mehta’s Unyielding Pursuit of Truth Amidst Rejections

“Delhi Crime,” the gripping series that delves into the harrowing 2012 Delhi gang rape case, stands today as a testament to perseverance and unwavering commitment to storytelling. However, its path to acclaim was anything but straightforward. Director Richie Mehta recently unveiled the challenges he faced in bringing this narrative to life, highlighting the initial rejections and the eventual triumph that followed.

In 2017-2018, when Mehta pitched “Delhi Crime” to major streaming platforms like Amazon and Netflix, he encountered significant resistance. The series, based on the sensitive subject of the 2012 gang rape, was deemed “too controversial,” leading to multiple rejections. Mehta described the project as a “shot in the dark,” emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding its acceptance. It wasn’t until he restructured the script, following advice from an HBO executive known for overseeing shows like “Game of Thrones” and “The Wire,” that the series began to gain traction.

The turning point for “Delhi Crime” came when the first two episodes were showcased at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival under the Indie Episodic category. The positive reception at Sundance caught the attention of streaming platforms, leading to Netflix acquiring the series. This marked a significant milestone, transforming a once-rejected project into a globally recognized series.

Mehta’s dedication to authenticity is evident in the meticulous research undertaken for the series. He spent six years studying the case, engaging with Delhi Police officers involved in the investigation, and accessing legal documents. This extensive groundwork ensured a portrayal that was both accurate and respectful. Notably, Mehta chose not to depict the assault on screen, focusing instead on the investigation and the human stories intertwined with it.

“Delhi Crime” stands out for its ensemble of Indian talent, both in front of and behind the camera. Mehta emphasized his belief in India’s artistic prowess, stating, “I am convinced that India has the best talent on earth.” By showcasing local actors and crew, the series not only tells an Indian story but does so through an authentically Indian lens.

Mehta’s aspiration extends beyond national boundaries. He envisions creating content that resonates globally, aiming to challenge perceptions and highlight stories of resilience and heroism. “We are not making movies for each other. We are making movies to change the world,” Mehta remarked, underscoring his commitment to impactful storytelling.

The journey of “Delhi Crime” from repeated rejections to international acclaim underscores the power of perseverance and the importance of authentic storytelling. Richie Mehta’s unwavering dedication brought to light a narrative that not only captivated audiences but also sparked meaningful conversations worldwide.
