The Indian film industry has reached an unprecedented milestone, crossing the ₹13,000 crore threshold for the first time in history. According to the Ormax Box Office Report 2025, the total domestic gross collections soared to ₹13,395 crore, shattering the previous record of ₹12,226 crore set in 2023. This monumental growth was primarily fueled by a resurgent Hindi film industry and a sharp rise in average ticket prices.
The primary driver of this record-breaking year was the spy action thriller ‘Dhurandhar’. Directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, the film grossed a staggering ₹950 crore at the Indian box office. In doing so, it surpassed Stree 2 (₹698 crore) to become the highest-grossing Hindi-language film of all time.
Hindi cinema overall enjoyed its best-ever year, contributing ₹5,504 crore to the total gross. A significant shift in audience behavior was noted: 93% of Hindi box office revenue came from original Hindi productions. Dependence on dubbed South Indian content plummeted from 31% in 2024 to just 7% in 2025, signaling a decisive return to mainstream Hindi storytelling.
While the industry celebrated record revenues, the landscape across languages was varied:
- International Cinema: Hollywood and global films witnessed a 49% growth, marking the best performance for international titles in India since the pandemic.
- South Indian Languages: The combined share of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam films dropped from 48% to 44%. Only Kannada cinema saw significant growth, largely due to the success of Kantara A Legend: Chapter-1.
- Gujarati Cinema: Emerged as a surprise breakout, growing by 189% thanks to the blockbuster Laalo: Krishna Sada Sahaayate (₹114 crore).
- Declines: Marathi and Punjabi cinema faced the steepest drops, shrinking by 46% and 43%, respectively.
In a surprising trend, despite the revenue surge, actual footfalls declined by 6%, totaling 832 million admissions. The financial growth was instead propelled by a 20% rise in Average Ticket Price (ATP), which jumped from ₹134 to ₹161. This is the sharpest growth in ATP recorded in the last four years, driven by the dominance of premium-priced Hindi and International event films.
With 37 films crossing the ₹100 crore mark (up from 22 in 2024), the Indian box office is increasingly consolidating around massive “tentpole” releases like Dhurandhar, Kantara A Legend: Chapter-1, and Chhaava, which were the only three films to surpass the ₹500 crore milestone in 2025.
