Netflix India Celebrates 10 Years: Monika Shergill Reflects on the Power of Indian Stories

Netflix India has reached a landmark decade in the country, celebrating 10 years of pioneering digital entertainment and diverse storytelling. Since its launch in January 2016, the platform has transformed from an international entrant into a local cultural mainstay. Marking this anniversary, Monika Shergill, Vice President – Content, Netflix India, shared a reflective message on the platform’s commitment to “honest” Indian narratives.

Shergill, who joined the streamer nearly seven years ago, emphasized that the goal has always been to tell local stories with such conviction that they resonate globally. “Staying rooted would allow them to find love both at home and globally,” she noted, citing the international success of Indian originals that have sparked conversations far beyond national borders.

The journey from 2016 to 2026 has been marked by a shift from niche content to mass-market appeal, fueled by high-profile collaborations with India’s top talent and technicians. Shergill highlighted the “privilege” of working with creators who consistently push boundaries to reflect a complex and ever-evolving India.

To mark the milestone, Shergill featured on the cover of Fortune India alongside Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer. She expressed deep gratitude to Bajaria and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos for their unwavering support of the Indian slate. Under this leadership, Netflix has produced globally acclaimed titles like Delhi Crime, Heeramandi, and Squid Game (which found a massive audience in India).

Shergill also acknowledged the role of the Indian audience, describing them as both Netflix’s “biggest fans and toughest critics.” This constant viewer engagement has been the North Star for the platform’s creative direction, ensuring that content remains authentic to the Indian spirit while scaling for a worldwide audience.

As Netflix India enters its second decade, the vision remains clear: local authenticity with global reach. With the recent expansion into live events and sports—including the blockbuster rights to WWE RAW and NFL Christmas Gameday—the streamer is positioned to remain the primary destination for Indian entertainment seekers in 2026 and beyond.
