Danish Khan to Step Down as Sony LIV and Studio NXT Head After a Decade of Transformation

In a major leadership transition within the Indian media and entertainment sector, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has announced that Danish Khan, Business Head of Sony LIV and Studio NXT, will be stepping down from his role. Khan, a pivotal figure in the network’s growth for over a decade, will remain with the company until March 31, 2026, to ensure a seamless leadership transition.

Danish Khan’s departure marks the conclusion of a significant era for SPNI. Across two stints spanning more than 20 years, he has been instrumental in crafting some of India’s most iconic television and digital properties.

Since taking charge of Sony LIV in 2019, Khan spearheaded the platform’s high-profile relaunch as Sony LIV 2.0. His leadership transformed the service from a catch-up TV site into a premium OTT powerhouse. Under his tenure, the platform achieved remarkable financial and engagement milestones:

  • Revenue Growth: A massive five-fold increase in topline revenue.
  • User Engagement: A four-fold increase in Monthly Active Users (MAUs).
  • Revenue Contribution: Sony LIV now accounts for nearly 25% (one-quarter) of SPNI’s total revenue.

Khan’s tenure at Sony LIV is defined by a “quality-over-quantity” content strategy that produced some of India’s most critically acclaimed web series. Key titles launched under his watch include:

  • Digital Hits: Scam, Maharani, Rocket Boys, Freedom at Midnight, and Tabbar.
  • Reality TV & Formats: He was responsible for bringing Shark Tank India to the digital space and maintaining the dominance of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC).

Before his digital stint, as the head of Sony Entertainment Television (SET), Khan oversaw the meteoric rise of non-fiction giants like The Kapil Sharma Show, Super Dancer, and Superstar Singer. He also greenlit beloved fiction titles such as Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai and Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi.

Gaurav Banerjee, MD & CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India, lauded Khan’s contribution, stating, “Danish has been a key part of SPNI’s growth journey… contributing across television, studio, and digital businesses. We thank him for his leadership and the strong foundation he leaves behind.”

Reflecting on his exit, Danish Khan expressed gratitude for his time at the network: “Sony Pictures Networks India has been an incredibly important part of my professional journey… I’ve had the opportunity to build businesses and brands that truly matter.”

While Khan prepares to pursue new opportunities, SPNI has indicated that a succession plan will be announced in due course. His departure signals a new chapter for Sony LIV as it seeks to maintain its momentum in an increasingly competitive OTT market.
